S jo was born out of a RCA design PhD project looking to evolve power & privilege specifically within the act of craft practice between traditional women’s craft communities and NGOs/designers in development. It consistently searches for new vocabulary & syntax for traditional craft skills and makers. Our signature jewellery, conceptualised in 2011, values each craftwoman’s creativity. The magic of our pieces comes from the symphony of working together as different craftswomen, in a nurturing and mutual learning space.

S jo Diary: What’s in store…

Dear friends,

Now that we are more or less confined to our homes, I want to share positivity and celebrate ‘hope’ our most enduring human emotion. For that I would like to share the inspiration behind our upcoming collection a little earlier than anticipated. It celebrates movement aptly and adornment for the sheer joy of it. It is a salute to the fearless who make it possible for us to live our everyday lives smoothly now felt more than ever. So as we all look forward to spring and anticipate what is to come in these unprecedented times, here’s a peek into the colourful world that drove our passion in the latest collection.

Inspired by the infamous trucks of Pakistan, the moving bursts of colour, pattern, sound and textiles that each is so familiar with yet awed by the ferocity of individual expression that each owner exhibits. These trucks cover long distances to transport goods and food all over Pakistan. They tend to be individually owned by the truck drivers, which is why so much attention is lavished on them. There are scenes from the home towns and villages of drivers to remind them of their homes while in transit on the road where they spend most of their time. Sometimes political statements are also made by way of portraits of admired leaders.

This captivating craft uses a mix of materials wood, metal, hand beaten pewter, reflective paper and our favourite, textiles and tassels. Our senses are treated to joyful dance of movement; swirling and jingling as these beautiful beasts drive down our plains, deserts and mountains.

The upcoming collection will be an ode to the mixed-media truck art and craft that envelopes all in its beautiful embrace as a unique contrast to Pakistan’s rugged natural landscape.

Long sashaying tassels, pompoms and embroidered patterns on earrings paired with hand crafted shisham wood, gemstones and beads mimic the movement of truck embellishments as the wind moves through them.

This more is more aesthetic was the inspiration for our upcoming capsule collection. Alongside of course we continue to create our timeless signature pieces in new hues.

I will be sharing cheerful posts while we are under this grey cloud to brighten our mood weekly. Stay tuned and please take care of yourself! Please be mindful negativity affects our overall health and mental health is equally important!

Warm wishes

Seher x
